FAQ
How do I find a publisher for my manuscript?
Most publishers receive hundreds and sometimes thousands of manuscripts each year. Often publishers receive so many manuscripts that they cannot respond quickly or with more than a form (rejection) letter to individual authors. UAP receives approximately 1000 proposals each year.
Authors have a greater opportunity of finding a publisher for their manuscripts if they do a little homework first.

Step 1: Visit bookstores and libraries and find out which publishers are publishing the type/genre of book you have written.

Step 2: Visit those publishers’ web sites to learn if they will consider unsolicited manuscripts and, if so, whether they have specific submission guidelines that will facilitate the consideration of your manuscript.

Step 3: Contact the appropriate publishers as directed by their guidelines.

How are books chosen?
At the University of Alberta Press books are chosen based on their suitability to the Press’ publishing program, academic rigour, and quality.

How much does it cost to publish a book?
There are as many possible answers to that question as there are books. The variables include the amount and complexity of editorial work required; the amount, composition and complexity of illustrations; the requirement for permissions; the number of finished pages; the number of copies printed; whether the book will be in hard cover, soft cover or both.

How much money is needed in order for the Press to accept a book for publication?
The decision to publish is made independent of the availability of funds to cover the costs of publication. However, at the University of Alberta Press we seek subvention to cover the printing costs and, if there are extraordinary preprinting costs such as illustration related costs, we also seek money to cover those costs.

How do I get an ISBN for a University of Alberta publication that is being published by my department?
Simply email your request for the proper form to fill out to Mary Mahoney-Robson (mmahoney@ualberta.ca), 492-0718 or Yoko Sekiya (ysekiya@ualberta.ca), 492-3662.
